VISTO had a simple goal in the curation of the art collection for Barcelona's iconic Fairmont Rey Juan Carlos I: to create a dialog between the city's great works of public art—by artists including Joan Miró and Antoni Gaudí—and those in the hotel. We sought to bring the city into the hotel, so to speak, and for guests to be able to privately experience contemporary, often surprising responses to these well-known artworks that are such an important part of Barcelona's urban fabric.

Three-dimensional pieces in the rooms and suites were inspired by Gaudi's iconic tile design along the sidewalks of the Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona's center. Working with European craftsmen, VISTO deconstructed Gaudi's design and created elegant works of cut-paper and relief sculpture.

Beyond being inspired by public art in Barcelona, the art was designed to reference the forms of the building's unique Modernist architecture.

Every piece in the Fairmont Rey Juan Carlos I was commissioned to reimagine the great works of public art in Barcelona and to bring them inside the walls of the hotel.

These pieces play with the simple geometric forms of the hotel and circular movement.
